Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
