Space Traveler Discloses Depression Following Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The diverse crew also included leaders in different industries.
